THE BAND!

one toa payoh north.
design and technology block, level 2.
band/orchestra room.
BEATTY MILITARY BAND is currently a symphonic band that is run in military style. the band not only focuses on our "indoor" aspect, and also keep our "outdoor" roots. as a military band, the band not only plays concert music, the band also does footdrills like any other UG group and participates actively in parades during school events. thus, our bandsmen are well-rounded students with physical, musical and character training.

the band's current resident conductor, Mr. IAN LUM, took over the baton in 2008. he has led the band in participating in various school events like the CCA OPEN HOUSE & the ANNUAL AWARDS CEREMONY PARADE in 2008, as well as the 2nd concert of the ESPRIT! series, ESPRIT! 2-B, held on 4 APRIL 2008 after a 19-year hiatus.

the band is currently divided into the JUNIOR BAND and the MAIN BAND. junior band members will be auditioned into the main band after 1 year. this year, we will be holding a FIRST RECITAL in December for our junior band members. parents of the junior band members will get to hear their child perform a simple piece on stage with their principal instrument then. also, we will be holding a section competition on the same day for the main band.

Friday, December 11,2009

Hey people, we appreciate those who took the extra effort to come down today. Knowing that they did not bring sticks or mouth pieces home to prac, they still made an effort to come all the way down to sch, even if they had appointments after that. This shows they take responsibility in their playing, and do not wish to drop back to square one when band resumes. For those of u who did not even make the effort to sign home to prac, well its at ur own risk then. Haha.

Oh yeah, our bandroom is getting a new coat of paint!

5th Dec Clarification

This post is just to clear all confusion that is occuring.

Firstly, Band room WILL NOT BE OPENED today.

Next, there will be no audience (parents) during the 5th December (this Saturday) because the number of parents attending didn't reach the target set BUT there will STILL be..
  • Section Competition
  • Sec 1s First Recital
  • Main Band performance (Nuts and Crackers)
  • Sec1s Combine Performance (Gently Touch the Sky)
Lastly, if I miss out on anything let me know.
One more thing, all the best for 5th December even though I won't be around!

Important for ALL Sec 1s

This is something important for ALL Sec 1s. Mr Lim has instructed me to tell all of you to look through your theory worksheets. Do look through them and study it. Also, let me take the opportunity to remind all of you, including the seniors, to take care of yourself.

Additional: Do reflect on what you have done for the past 6 to 7 months. What are you doing to improve during this period?

Think about it.

Bandsmen, although CCA is suspended for the time being. But still make sure you continue your part as a bandsmen and search on some videos that would help you to improve musically. Spent some time listening to other school's performance and see what you can learn from them.
As for when will CCA resume, the leaders would inform you in advance. So meanwhile, make use of the break wisely.

#67.Friends are our ASSETS, Drills=Discipline

Hey bandsmen, I hope you have enjoyed the camp. I need to tell all of you this, every bandsmen is important and I hope every single one of you will treasure each other. If any of us is missing, the sound that we make will not be full. All of you should find out the reasons of those who can't be present for practices and also, find out what is happening in their lives. We are all important, the band can't sound great without any one of us. Also, I feel that all of you should take drills seriously. Drills instils discipline in every one of us and we ought to show it some respect. Drills make us different from other bands as well. Friends are our assets and Drills=Discipline.

#60. feedback from camp

Band Camp Is over and of all the aims we had set for this camp...
We have accomplished most of them!!!
They are...

1. Prepare concert and syf pieces ( not accomplished, but we found the root of the prob! ITS RHYTHM! )

2. Improve drill standards ( ok... not so much but we learn to march and play etc etc! )

3. Prepare for SYF drill video ( Even though we had prepared, i still think we could have done a better job with people being more serious and with the correct mindset )

4. To have better bonds among the bandsmen ( i believe we did this rather well )

5. To enjoy this 3 days together! ( I'm sure some or most or ALL of those who attended enjoyed yourselves! )

6. The good thing about this camp is... THE ENERGY AND SPIRIT IS THERE!!! (clap and cheer!)

The bad thing is we were unable to finish our set piece due to the difference in mindsets. In order to improve further we have to practice our parts more! SLs take note! During sectionals, train their RHYTHM first! Its IMPORTANT! After that, play the correct NOTES, add good ARTICULATIONS and good PHRASING. Thats all!

With this, we can advance even further than our level of standard now!

Oh! And about the drill competition! Sorry about the short preparation time, but we can see the effort put in by ALL of you! I'm sure if there was more time, you would give us a much greater performance!

Here are some comments...

To Barrack 1: Your timing is horribly fast... i can see that all of you are about to tire out. Dun so fast, maybe because its a competition and you all panick. ok. Yi jie, your commands may be loud, but they are not so clear yet. Try to make them clearer so people can differentiate between commands!

To Barrack 2: Your performance is above average, with a few problems here and there. Try to find any sec 3 to improve your drill standard. They will be willing to help! Elisa, good job in your very the LOUD commands!

To Barrack 3: Using the 13 step command a lot and its good. In this type of competition is best to use your better points and not hastily teach another tougher command just to get more marks, u might get minus marks more than the pluses! Swan Keng, good job, dun get mixed up with drill commandsl, other than that every things alright! XD

To Barrack 4: I see a lot of people working hard even though there were quite a lot of mistakes, thats good! Dun look back on those mistakes, rather, try to correct them and seek help from your seniors. Hafiz, even though you had a leg injury, u still worked hard. Command louder! you can do it!

Thats all, Remember to do the homework mr lum gave you!

Write down rhythms and bar numbers, study the score! AND KEEP IN TOUCH WITH YOUR INSTRUMENT!

Good luck for first recitals!

#57. Philharmonic Winds

PHILHARMONIC WINDS is performing on 7th December 2008 (Sunday) , 7.30pm @ the esplanade concert hall.
This is the last time Mr Leonard Tan conducts for phil winds before he goes off to indiana.
Bandsmen, this is a must see concert!

Below are the details of the concert:

The Philharmonic Winds in Concert

Works featured in this concert include British composer Gordon Jacob's William Byrd Suite, composed in the 20th century as a tribute to the English Renaissance master-composer William Byrd who lived more than 300 years ago. Karel Husa's Music for Prague 1968 is a deeply evocative work commemorating the Prague Spring reform movement in the old Czechoslovakia. Its power to move led to it being later transcribed for full orchestra, taking the opposite direction from usual orchestral transcriptions for bands.

Moving on to the traditional music of the Americas, Herbert Owen Reed's La Fiesta Mexicana is inspired by various forms of music he heard while living in Mexico. Interestingly, all three pieces demonstrate influence by bells in different ways, and the audience will hear bell tones painting vivid pictures of churches and landscapes.

Finally, renowned saxophonist Vincent Gnojek, Professor of Saxophone at the University of Kansas, USA, returns to perform with Philwinds. Paul Creston's Concerto for Saxophone and Orchestra is one of the most significant compositions for the relatively-younger saxophone, only breaking into the orchestra lineup in the last century, and Philwinds is honoured to have Vince back with us again.

These pieces have been integral in forming the backbone of wind orchestra music, and any wind orchestra afficionado must grab this chance to hear them at least once in their lifetimes!

I ENCOURAGE all people to watch (LISTEN TO) CONCERTs by other schools as well as Community Bands.
When people from different ways of life or to put simply, different places gather to form a band, the band will be classified as a COMMUNITY BAND. Examples are the Philharmonic Winds, the West Winds, Sembawang Symphonic Winds etc... etc... etc.

Two concerts put up by community bands are:
19th November 2008 - IN HARMONY 24: CELEBRATING 50 YEARS OF MILITARY MUSIC SERVICES.
This concert is put up by the Singapore Armed Forces Central Band & 6 Members of 'The President's Own US Marine Band.
Featuring songs like:
Three Portraits for Symphonic Band - World Premiere (Kelly Tang)Concertante for Flute, Clarinet and Winds (Franz Danzi)
Symphonic Dances from West Side Story - Singapore Premiere (Leonard Bernstein)
Masquerade (Vincent Persichetti)

&

21st December 2008 - SYMPHONIE IV
By the SEMBAWANG SYMPHONIC WINDS!
Featuring Songs like:
Folk Song Suite
Raise of the Son
Dvorak's 9th Symphony
Cantiphonia

Two fantastic concerts by community bands. Submit your names to Nicholas or Guan Chin or anyone who will pass your names to us XD

Not to mention concerts by other schools,
6th December 2008 - PASSIONE III
By the Yuying Secondary School Concert Band

And

19th December 2008 - MUSIC WITH HEARTS 2
By the Evergreen Secondary School Concert Band

I Really advise all BANDSMEN to go for concerts and listen to how good YOUR instrument can be.
Names pass to the same people of course.

Ok!
A couple of things to note!
Next WEDNESDAY, 16th July, there is an Student Chorus rehearsal.
Girls who have yet to show Ms Phua their white skirts better bring them next wednesday.
The next OO rehearsal would be on 19th July.
Whether there will be band practice on that day would be decided soon.(Real soon, i mean it)

Next!
When you are in the STUDENT CHORUS practice, please do not talk unnecessarily.
This is a really bad habit of the bandsmen, talking during practice time.
Please change it.
I know sometimes u all need to ask your seniors about somethings, but other than music, please save it for later.
Coming into the bandroom during practice time is basically for... PLAYING MUSIC
Nothing else.
Do not give the top 4 a reason to punish you all.

Following that,
NOTEBOOKS!
How many million times do you need us to talk about this???
THE NOTEBOOK IS THERE FOR A REASON.
A few people still owes me punishment...
Not bringing the book to band... 20 pumpings
Not taking the book out, as in u have the book but its in the bag... 10 pumpings
Not taking down any notes... 5 pumpings
GET IT???

Nothing else for now.
Everyone jia you for OO and our next major event... NATIONAL DAY DINNER

GUAN CHIN

They are suppose to be used during PRACTICES.
To Take Down NOTES and IMPORTANT POINTS which are pointed out.
So please take them seriously. (I mean it)

NO.3
On THURSDAY, 3th July, we will be playing National anthem. Sorry to most of the sec 1s as they wont be performing with us this coming THURSDAY. The List of performers will be out by TUESDAY, 1st July. Well, apparently band is doing parade commanding at the same time so it would look rather special. Performers are to reach school by 6.30 am on that day

Oh... thats all, by the way.
The playlist has been updated.
The top 5 songs would be the songs we would be playing for our concert.
Im still trying to find Mystery of Duffy's cut and pop culture though.
